Puerto Princesa Needs Your Help

THE RACE IS ON to declare the next Seven Wonders of Nature where one billion people are expected to take part in this rare event. Our very own Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the twenty-seven finalists included in the competition.

I shamefully haven't gone to the Underground River but for now I'll contend myself to promote and push for the distinct recognition where the Great Barrier Reef, The Grand Canyon, and the Galapagos Islands are among included in this prestigious list.

Jan-Jan's Culture reflects our nation's culture: Trash in, trash out

I REMEMBER seeing this dance called, "Otso Otso," which was popularized by Bayani Agbayani and Vhong Navarro back in 2004.Kids started to dance the routine. Mommies started to dance it, cousins started to teach their nephews - it was the craze.

It was the same dance I saw in the clubs in California, USA. It's called a 'Booty Dance' (Butt Dance) where men can pair up behind women if you know what I mean (see picture above). "Why are people dancing this?" I asked.

Years past and more dances came up, "Spaghetti", "Bulaklak", "Hotdog" dance and the likes came out. Children start dancing it more with their parents, uncles, aunts and neighbors. People started dancing it in birthday parties, graduation ceremonies, and in television shows. It's the "in" thing.

In retrospect, I wouldn't be surprised if Jan-Jan Estrada's parents (Willing Willie fame) didn't think it was bad because we've tolerated it. We've allowed it. It was the culture and it was FUN. With the entry of pornographic indie films in 2008, the balance between right and wrong was now blurred. Strip club dancing has become the norm.

That blurring caused all these confusion and people can't now know the difference between 'lewd' and appropriate dance. Willie Revillame didn't think it was wrong. How can he discern?

To those who understands, I'm not about to go Taliban on this topic but our culture needs to be more discerning. Not every thing that we see is right and I hope we can teach our children values so they'll grow up right.

You probably heard the term trash in, trash out. It simply means if you let trash in your life you will definitely stink. What happened to the March 12 incident in the Willing Willie show was a stench that the public couldn't bare any longer. It's good that we're cleaning up.

There's Power in Numbers

I'M PROUD of what we were able to do. The ideals, the values, the integrity, and the persistence made for a perfect ingredient to a age-old question of Filipino island-mentality. Bloggers and the online community, the consumer advocates, those who have love for values united to take one stand pouring out our effort in the social media tool Facebook. An environmentalist, volunteer, and blogger, Froilan Grate opened up a page and immediately people poured into this page. Thank you Kuya Froi. Bloggers used their respective blogs as platforms to voice their strong opinion against the show, Willing Willie. This became the catalyst for change. Who would've thought that our voice could put a powerful television producer like Willie Revillame go off the air.

Our cause has life. Our cause transcends boundaries. Our cause is God-fearing because we cannot allow individuals trample on what's dear to our hearts. ". . . a move whose impact is unprecedented in the country’s history of consumer activism." was how the Philippine Daily Inquirer described the phenomenon.

I APPLAUD Monique Wilson's stand on Jan-Jan Estrada's issue, the 6-year-old traumatized boy on TV5's Willing Willie show. She called on fellow actors to draw the line and make a stand against shows (taped or live) that exploit and abuse children.

Her stand - and the likes of Lea Salonga - gives a tinge of hope that, no matter how influential Willie Revillame is with his wealth, there are artists who will stand up to fight children's rights. Where is Piolo, Sharon, Regine, John, Kris, Sarah, Bea, Ruffa, DingDong, Marian, Sam, and the rest of the television and movie actors? What's their stand? Where do they stand? Are they allowing this to happen? I challenge them to do what Lea and Monique did.

I know it's difficult - given their relationship to Willie - but why not issue a press release supporting respect for children? They don't have to mention Willie but they should support children who are being abused blatantly in society. This matter happened in their own backyard and they should keep the trash out of their community.

Why boycott CDO?

In an official statement, CDO Foodsphere, Incorporated would rather continue their business with Willing Willie out of good faith. In contrast, Jollibee Food Corporation, pulled the plug from Willing Willie taking a chunk of advertising money from the embattled prime time show.

With CDO it's business as usual taking TV5's good faith promise. They took TV5's word that the show will not be the same again. Who are they fooling? Would Willie Revillame become squeaky clean like Piolo Pascual overnight? We know Willie. We know that advertisers make its research before they decided to buy commercial and promo spots in the show. We know CDO's market relies heavily on the popularity of Willing Willie's format.

So for CDO to say, ". . . TV5’s WillingWillie has, no doubt, jolted us out of our comfort zones as an advertiser in the top-rating show," is not true. Child exploitation shown on national television should've angered the executives of CDO but it would rather continue to fund this show out of "good faith" because they "are not in the position to pass judgment on the incident."

CDO saw Jan-Jan's tears and dance, got jolted but they cannot pass judgment on the show. What values does CDO speak of now?

Dahil dito gumawa ulit po ako ng sulat upang ipetisyon ang agarang pagpasa ng nararapat na batas. Children are not a side issue and as a citizen of this nation, I have equal responsibility to do every right thing to protect their rights. This includes closely monitoring every move congress makes that will curb abuse made on minors.

If congress will not do more, please know that this letter effectively becomes a record counting the number of days until members of this 15th Congress passes a bill that protects children's rights.

THERE'S POWER IN NUMBERS: If you want to help stop Willing Willie's unjustifiable maltreatment of its contestants - including children - please help me write letters to advertisers asking them to stop advertising in that show. The Willing Willie March 12 incident became the spark of a public display of indignation detesting the culture manifesting from this show. The producers of the show lacked remorse when it issued a public apology supposedly addressing the situation.

I can no longer tolerate the producers claim that this is an isolated incident. I detest the offensive excuse and remark TV5, Willie Revillame, and the executive producers gave in defense of their action towards the 6-year-old contestant, Jan-Jan.

TV5's Apology and What Jan-jan's Face Shows

By looking through the pictures, you decided to take part in this discussion in taking a stand on the issue of this nation's apathy, loss of family values, and degenerating truth from lies. The images were posted in light of TV5's statement that is wrought of deception that will not add accountability to this network.)

THE YOUTUBE site that gave you first hand of what the show Willing Willie did to a 6-year-old boy is no longer public:

So we made screen captures of the segment as it appears on the YouTube video. We juxtaposed TV5's apology note made in their website last March 29, which was seventeen days after the incident happened on Willie Revillame's show. We were flabbergasted by TV5 and Willie Revillame's supposed sorry note and took exception on the following statement TV5 made:

"He (Jan-jan) appeared to be sad or even in tears, not because he was being forced to dance, but because he felt the dance was “serious” and he was playing a role. He did not want to smile because of his missing upper front teeth and because of the presence on the set of former basketball player Bonel Balingit who Jan-jan thought was a scary “giant”."

Take note that TV5 used the words, "appear", "playing a role", "scary "giant"" in reference to former PBA player Bonel Balingit.

TV5 thinks the public is not as bright as intelligent as they should be.

The images are as clear as daylight. Case in points:

Willie Revillame started off by taunting the kid even bringing in Bonel Balingit on this segment.
Fear is written all over Jan-jan's face. It's as if he was going to be punished if he did not do what Willie asked him to do.
Jan-jan should've smiled already after his "role playing" - according to TV5 - as soon as he was done with his role.
Show host constant laughter and the crowd's show of hysterics is traumatizing.
Willie Revillame went overboard by using Jan-jan as his entertainment "piece" in front of the audience.
The audience has lost any sensitivities by approving Willie's antics against a child who's only commitment was to help his family.
Willing Willie and TV5 betrayed Jan-jan and any sense of decency that should be maintained in any form of entertainment - whether taped or live.

Bottom line: Jan-jan was not amused but confused and fearful.

We hope to see government agencies, congress, and authorities to make sure the rights of children are protected.

Mr. Willie Revillame, the producers of 'Willing Willie' and TV5 sincerely and deeply apologize for the segment of the show featuring 6-year-old Jan-Jan Suan which viewers may have found offensive or in bad taste. We wish to stress that there was never any intention to humiliate or abuse Jan-Jan or any contestant on the show," said the statement.

". . .WAS NEVER ANY INTENTION to humiliate or abuse Jan-jan or any contestant on the show," was ABC5's statement to even justify what Willie Revillame did to a traumatized six-year-old boy.

Is it business as usual? I think so. A popular saying stated this, "Whatever will not kill you will only make you stronger." It seems like this event will only make - not just Willie Revillame - ABC5 bolder and audacious and empower Willing Willie to do more to get their ratings up.

One of the many things the public can do to get their message across is to publicly boycott advertisers of Willing Willie. Can this be done? If the conviction of the public is strong enough to send advertisers that indirectly 'prey' on minors by supporting shows like this, then we can see the success of this endeavor.

The question now is - is the public game?

In Willie's show in ABC5, "Willing Willie," the audience gave off huge laughter and approval as a kid does what Willie Revillame labeled as "Burlesque" dancing in reference to an old movie.

Dancing to a Snoop Dogg hit, the boy innocently gyrates to the beat. My jaw dropped. This boy was exploited - first by his parents, next by his tita (who brought him to the show), next by the producers of the show, next by Willie Revillame, then the audience, then the executives of the show.

What parent would have their son dance like that and think it's funny? It's bad enough that bar dancers want out of their jobs to do something decent then this.

I'm not going to talk about Willie because his reputation right now is predictable but the kinds of comments I read on Facebook that would just make you cringe:

"masyado kasi kayong malisyoso mag isip. OA ung reactions ng iba. duh. (You guys are full of malice in your thoughts. The others are just over reacting. Duh.)" - gorgeousgicel

"MGA HATERS WALA KAYONG MAGAWA SA BUHAY. TINGNAN NYO NGA ANG LIKES SA VIDEO AT DISLIKES. MGA BOBO (All you haters just have nothing else to do. Just look at the likes and dislikes. You morons.)" - MAEV123

". . .dirty dancing while crying what's wrong? talent nya yon ang masama lang kung pinahubad xa ni Willie ...Ano ba kayo konting bagay lang ginagawan ng issue...just watch and have fun (. . .That's his talent and what should be bad is if Willie asked him to take his clothes off ...What's up with you guys it's just a small thing that you guys are making an issue of. . .)" - MSYashegny

In the name of entertainment, the audience shows their approval like they would like their child to be bar dancers when they grow up.

I am praying for JanJan right now and I hope you will too after seeing this video.

I'm praying for that this kid will be blessed to have his mind protected by the corruption being instilled by his guardians. I am praying that Janjan's parents will understand soon enough that they need to love their child more and that this way of milking money from this child is not God's way. I am also praying for the audience - laughing and approving this vicious thing to this child - to realize and repent from this way of life.

I hope the MTRCB, DSWD, and Congress will do something to protect the child's welfare.

Marty's Launches Savory Spicy Flavored Vegetable Chicharon!

After Oishi's much successful product launch of it's vegetable chicharon, Marty's Salt & Vinegar, it just launched another variant - Spicy Flavor. I bought three big bags for my Cooling Station customers so they could try it out. I bought one for myself to see how it tastes like. I think it's really good and I had to drink a glass of warm milk just to take out the sting. I'll be stacking more in my store to anticipate more patrons.

This product was launched after Marty's re-launched Baconettes - the Bacon-less, Bacon-flavored Vegetable Chicharon. Ha! I think Oishi Brand Manager should pay me for that tagline. It's good but I think it's a bit saltier for my taste.

Ever since gas and oil started seeping in the basement floor of the West Tower condominium, no one has sued First Philippines Industrial Corporation (FPIC) for endangering the lives of Makati City's residents.

The mayor should have been the very first one to defend the city's residents. But I have not heard anybody from the City Engineer's office bring this matter to the courts.

Did you ever read or watch anybody from our media giants like ABSCBN, GMA News, Philippine Daily Inquirer, and the Philippine Star raise as much concern as they would be with the current impeachment proceedings of the Ombudsman? Where are the columnists? Why aren't they helping create more awareness about this precarious situation of our citizens?

Why aren't they doing anything about it to help themselves? Are they ignorant of the danger? Are we living lives so simply that we couldn't care less if something under our feet will endanger us?

I was flabbergasted to realize that any catastrophic event can cause disaster of biblical proportions if these oil pipes will burst and explode.

IT'S SAD that our nation is taken hostage by nations that hire Filipinos as workers. Ever since the new administration stepped in, it seems that we can't say anything or make a stand at any issue against any nations that hire our kababayans. China's leash dictated our non-support of Noble Peace Prize awarding ceremonies last year and now Libya government's position against nations who support the recent NATO attacks in his country.

What's next? Is this our foreign policy now? Would nations like China and Libya use our OFWs as pawns to hostage and muffle our political will in the international community? Is this a step to the right direction? I think President Aquino should take a clear stand and tell nations our people have value and they can't hold our citizens as negotiation pieces for their advantage.

We are a nation rooted in the laws of God. No nation can own us - let alone - tell us how we should act.

FILIPINO artists will have the chance to showcase their talent and passion at Avida Towers Centera 3D Street Painting Festival on March 18 and 19, 2011 at Reliance Street in Mandaluyong City.

With the theme "Fast-forward: Life at the Center of the Metropolis", the art contest is part of the grand launch of Avida Land Corp.’s latest high rise project. The paintings will be open for public viewing starting March 19.

"What better way to mark the rise of another Avida Towers than to showcase the talent and creativity of Filipinos, whose artworks will adorn the street where this development will rise," says Avida Marketing Manager Tess Tatco.

The 3D street painting competition is open to all Filipino professional artists and students of all ages. Participants must form a team composed of three to seven members to qualify.

Contestants are required to submit a soft copy of their design at chriscahilig2011@gmail.com in JPEG format only on Tuesday, March 15 at exactly 10pm. Submitted design proposals must be based on the theme: "Fast-forward: Life at the Center of the Metropolis". The final artwork will be 8 x10 feet in size.

Design proposals will be evaluated and sorted for inclusion in a short-list; short-listed proposals are considered the official finalists of the competition. The contest will begin at 8AM on March 18th until 6 AM of the following day, March 19th.

Why target call-center agents? So what if infected men are not issued medical certificates? They can always get fake ones. The question we should address is, "What are we going to do to help these men?" We can always drive people out of work and out of the city by publishing sharp comments like this, however, we will not address the main problem of transmitting the disease to other unsuspecting victims. There should be a change in the lives of these people and sadly the city administrators cannot offer any help to ease the pain of these workers. Sadly we are quick to shun them and fail to provide help.

AFTER SHOWING YOU how dangerous some over-the-shelf personal products we use are, it is good now to show you what products my wife and I use today.

These are just some of the new team members of my bathroom club. Hahaha. That's funny. Kidding aside, these products are great discoveries my wife researched from the web after receiving a gift containing another product of the same manufacturer. Welcome, Human Nature!

I've retired the use of my over-the-counter/shelf personal care products this morning. Why? Do you know the ingredients of the personal care products you use? I was shocked to learn that majority of the ingredients in two of the three products I use are toxic? I was also shocked that the same products we're using can cause cancer. I've listed them all below just in case you wanted to know what the ingredients are of your favorite shampoo or facial wash.

Writing for Business As a Writer, Huh?

Malou and I attended this "Writing as a Profession" seminar held this afternoon at a nearby mall. All the resource speakers were talking about getting money from writing. I didn't hear a single speech about how to improve or love the work you're doing in writing. They forgot to help attendees put more heart into their work.

I didn't hear anybody talk about passion and the deep sense of appreciating the work of writing. Passion for me is doing something even if you're not paid to do it. Disagree or not but imagine all the artists that we have now - I'm sure they all did their work without even thinking about making it big. Think about Jose Rizal - a prolific writer you think - but did he ever imagine that will make a big deal out of his work? He didn't write Noli Me Tangere or El Fili with the thought, I will make it big doing these works. So I really had a hard time digesting what the theme of the workshop was all about.

As writers, we'll be missing the point if all we do is write with the financial status in mind. For me, writers who think about money as the end of their means needs to know how to write again.

The Pilot 'extends' a hand to a grieving man

As the story goes, the pilot held the flight for 12 minutes to wait for a man who got stuck in traffic and had to go through TSA's lengthy security procedures. Why? His two-year old grandson, who suffered severe head trauma, was going to be taken out of life-support unconditionally in a hospital in Denver, Colorado.

Twelve minutes could mean missed connecting flights, lost reputation by being late, or even penalties for anyone flying in that Southwest Airlines flight but nothing could ever replace any moment to bid goodbye to your loved ones.

Southwest management was able to trace the kind pilot who made this deed and what made it more applauding was he continued to become anonymous. Mabuhay to the nameless pilot who extended a hand of service to a grieving family.

1: Android can Run Multiple Apps at the Same Time

Starting with version 1.0, Android has been able to run multiple applications at the same time regardless of whether they are system apps or apps from the Android Marketplace. The current version of iPhone OS does offer limited multitasking, but only allows native applications such as Mail, iPod and Phone to run in the background. Android users benefit greatly from this discrepancy, as they can receive notifications, listen to music, or even record GPS data without keeping the application open. Apple will try to level the playing field with iPhone OS 4, granting developers access to a small and limiting list of APIs that can run certain services in the background, but it's a long way from the true multitasking that Android has.

2: Android Keeps Information Visible on Your Home Screen

One of the key features Android has is a customizable home screen keeps active widgets right at your fingertips, always accesible and always visible - without having to launch an application first. There are widgets for just about every app in the Android Marketplace from playing music to checking the weather and keeping up to date on Facebook. Meanwhile iPhone users are force to flip through their app list to locate and launch each app. If you wanted to check the forecast, for example, you would have to find the app, launch it, and then wait for it to load. With Android, all of that information can be displayed directly on your home screen, never more than a finger swipe away.

3: Android Has a Better App Market

It's true that Apple's App Store has over 180,000 applications, while the Android Marketplace has only just broken the 50,000 mark but Android's rapid growth and adoption give it the potential to catch up to the iPhone App Store. Android also has another advantage: a completely open market. Apple receives around 10,000 app submissions per week, yet many apps are overlooked because they appear too simple or denied because a similar app already exists. The Android Marketplace is driven entirely by its consumers, so the best app is the one that succeeds - not the first one to reach the market. In addition, the Android Marketplace doesn't censor its apps, so the possibilities are truly endless.

4: Android Gives You Better Notifications

The iPhone has some trouble with notifications. Because it's restricted to pop-up notifications, it can only handle one at a time and because it lacks multitasking, applications must be open in order for them to make notifications. Android, on the other hand, has a convenient notification bar which displays an icon for every notification you have waiting. The notification bar can also be pulled downward to reveal more detail about each notification. Android also allows app developers to make notification details viewable from the lock screen, something the iPhone can only do with native applications.

5: Android Lets You Choose Your Hardware

Apple users are encouraged to "Think Different" but when it comes to the actual hardware, they don't get much choice. You can pick the color, either black or white, and you get to choose between the 16GB or the pricier 32GB version. Other than that, you're stuck with the 3.5-inch, 320x480 pixel display, 256MB of RAM, and 600MHz processor. Because Android is an open platform, manufacturers have the freedom to pair it with any hardware they want, like the Nexus One (with 3.7-inch, 480x800 pixel display, 512MB of RAM, and 1GHz Snapdragon processor) or the Motorola Droid which has a physical keypad. Obviously, available selections will vary by carrier - speaking of which....

Great 3-in-1 Coffee with a Perfect Blend

Rarely you find some product from the past that will just find its way back in the grocery shelf. Blend 45. I remember the Susan Roces commercial about this back in the 80s. I remember how plump and good those morning dew moistened coffee "cherry" fruits were being hand picked and turned in coffee from it's coffee "seeds." It was one beverage that I liked best to try when I was a kid. No kidding.

Fast forward. I was pleasantly surprised that Universal Robina Corporation took the chance to revive the product. Why? I never tried Blend 45. I was always eyeing this Yellow, Red, and Brown product off the grocery shelf but my mom would always get Nescafé. Drats. I finally had the chance right now - tall and mature - to actually try it. I bought the 3-in-1 Instant Coffee sachets and went home happy.

Breakfast was usually Kopiko Coffee for me. I didn't like the Nescafé taste. I just got used to it but one morning, my wife, brought out this coffee that got my taste buds excited. I asked her if she brewed coffee or something. No, it's Blend 45 she said and this got me more excited. It's got that taste that - if you like Nescafé - will get you more excited because of the indescribable aroma that I can't love more. I now have a coffee I can call my own and it's Blend 45. It even cost less than Nescafé and Kopiko because I think it's introducing itself again in the market. It's less than 4 pesos. Why don't you try it.

(Mandaluyong) IN THEORY there would be more people betting on the lotto prize of more than Php500,000,000.00 today but interestingly no one has won it yet. In comparison, I was told that during President Arroyo's time Malacañang Palace officials would win it more than one time. How true is this? If this is true, did PCSO had itself used for the wrong purpose? I'm researching this right now and it would be a heinous crime to fool the citizens of this nation. Just a (creepy) thought.

Mabuhay, new 2010 CNN Woman Hero!

(Mandaluyong) A WOMAN who rescued and rehabilitated more than 10,000 young girls from sex slavery received CNN's 2010 Heroes Award after eight weeks of online voting by the public. Anuradha Koirala saved young women from sex brothels in the Nepal-India border child trafficking is rampant. "Human trafficking is a crime, a heinous crime, a shame to humanity," Koirala said after she was introduced in the recently concluded awarding ceremony.

Her dangerous work started in 1993 and it birthed the Maiti Nepal foundation that rehabilitated a lot of young girls who were victims of this crime. Demi Moore, who along with his husband, Ashton Kutcher, said that her organization, "provided more than a shelter for these girls and young women, she has created a home. It is a place for them to heal, go to school, learn a skill, and for some who are infected with HIV/AIDS, it is the place where they can spend their days surrounded by love."

She and the rest of the nominated Heroes for 2010 deserves the Mabuhay praise for her outstanding work and achievement that should be emulated more and more by the next generation.

"Daddy. . .are you okay?"

My left foot stepped on a slope of a curb on my way to get our car to attend a church seminar on parenting. It was embarrassing. I literally collapsed in view of about twenty tricycle drivers converged on the other side of the road and a bunch of beauty parlor clients behind me who probably saw everything. It was painful. Not my pride - it's the farthest thing from my mind. I quickly recovered and was able to come into a one leg kneeling position waiting for the numbing pain to subside. A good minute passed then I stood up to walk, injured but walking - albeit slowly and painfully still.

I continued walking to my car, which is about a good 30 yards away. Ack! Eck! Argh! I thought to myself as neighbors cautiously ask me what happened. Each step was excruciating. I smiled and said, "natapilok ako."

Night time. Malou helped prepare a bucket full of ice and water and dipped my swelling left foot in it. "Aaaaaa!" It was more painful. I couldn't believe how painful it was. At this, my one year and eleven months old son, Kye, came and started rubbing my legs as I lay on our couch. With his innocent voice he ask me, "Daddy. . .are you okay?" It was still very painful - mind you - but I was amazed at how concerned he was. He understands. I couldn't care less what happened to me now when your son who, at his very, very young age, know that his dad is not okay and he was showing that much care.

Day two. It's Sunday morning and I wrote this piece in honor of God who taught me to teach and demonstrate love that I am now getting from my son. I never wrote anything about my fatherhood (which was one of the main purpose of this blog) experiences. I blinked and now here. I'm glad I blinked. It's was one of those moments that you would like to read over and over as time passes by.

My son. I love my son. Thank you God.

What?! 'Pink' Lucky Me! Noodles?

While doing my stock replenishment at a nearby supermarket, I chanced upon a very odd-looking product that caught my attention. It's pink and it's squeezed in the middle of the Lucky Me! Noodles section. I took it and discovered, it's Lucky Me!'s new product called, "Pork Ribs." Hahaha. I was not amused by the flavor but by the radical way Monde Nissin colored their new instant noodle invention. We always know that red and orange is the most attractive way to associate your product with food but pink? What gives?

I researched the product online and it was so new, it's not even in Lucky Me!'s product page. Anyway, I bought five and placed it on my store's shelf.

Cooling Station will always be carrying new, interesting, and tasty products that customers can try. It will be a good addition to the store's market that devours instant noodle soups and canton variants like there's no tomorrow. Hahaha. Let's see how they will react to a new pink noodle soup.

Nescafe's Brown N' Creamy is out

Nescafe recently released its new three-in-one coffee products in the market called, Nescafe Brown N' Creamy 3-in-1 coffee. It is an apparent response to Kopiko's Brown Coffee and the market's growing taste and preference for coffee that has the "brown sugar" taste.

It's not as sweet and not as creamy, unfortunately. Kopiko Brown's Coffee is creamier and a smoother feel to it. Nescafe's is not like that and it's not good when the product claims to be creamy when it's actually not. But of course, that's me. Kopiko's edge is that it got out first, and it became the standard for this variant of three-in-one coffees. You have to have love for Nescafe to actually like this product. My verdict out of five stars? It's two stars only. But if you're a Nescafe loyalist and want to try this product, go check it out at Cooling Station. The product retails for Php6/sachet but we had to sell it at Php7.

Five (absurd) Thoughts Should 'P-Noy' Get Excommunicated

Let's say the Roman Catholic church continues with its excommunication of the president, what would happen next? Below are five thoughts (serious and farcical) that proves this move is counter-productive:

1. The church will be in danger of becoming irrelevant - At the end of the day, the government will continue to function and the president can convert to another Jesus-centered denomination? Will the government disenfranchise the Roman Catholic church? Interesting.

2. Jesus never excommunicated - Though the bible hinted on excluding a person out of the body of Christ, Jesus never said a message that a sinner can never repent and be part of the church once again. Did Jesus ever send fireballs from heaven to kill the Pharisees and those who condemned him? He teaches us to love our enemies right?

3. Excommunication is just on paper - The word means to suspend or to be deprived or to be out of communion. What does the Roman Catholic faith mean by this? It's just a paper. The person can just move on with his life and still believe in Jesus.

4. The Roman Catholic church will be sending the wrong signal - The church will cast fear on its members and it will be counter-productive. It could even mean excommunicating majority of its members. Why? Who follows the teachings the Roman Catholics give faithfully? Lately, there are twenty-one incidents of excommunication in the 21st Century alone. See if the following things fall under the society's category.

5. We'll be included in the Guinness World Records (again!) for the first president to ever get excommunicated while in office.

So will excommunication ever prosper in light of this situation with the Philippines' birth control? I don't agree with abortion as well but I agree to President Aquino's point that the husband-and-wife should decide on matters like this. The only danger here is if the Roman Catholic church never taught its laity on the best possible decision that they will never regret. Abstention may be good but to stop short of telling them why is not progressive. Now, teaching faith that God will provide the kids' and parents' needs are best option to go. It's now up to the parents to decide for themselves but yes, never abort a kid when it's conceived.

Would Excommunicating The President Solve Rising Population?

By now, the government is bent in curbing the rising population that it believes contributes to the poverty of this nation. On the clergy side, it's the issue of abortion that they go against. So what can anybody do about this situation?

I think the Roman Catholic church is missing the point in this matter. It is the duty of the government to impose laws that will help the state deal with economic issues. It may not be the proverbial silver bullet that will end poverty - the government knows that - but it will be doing something to give the choice directly in the hands of the laity. The church on the other hand has the golden opportunity to reveal the message of faith and grace to which the gospel clearly says about such problems we face as a society. The church is not doing enough, however, and this is causing much support to the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

So what if the church excommunicated the president? Would that change the scenario? It's one bullying tactic after another between the government and the Roman Catholic church and this does not solve anything.

Why is the RP Hostage-Taking, 83-Page Report only 59 Pages?

Curious how extensive and fast the investigation of the August 23 bungled hostage rescue drama, I downloaded a copy of the IIRC-prepared report and I immediately noticed that it only contained 59 pages out of the supposed 83-page report promised. What happened to the other 24 pages? What does it contain? I ask because the Aquino-led government is saying that it is promoting transparency, which I appreciate. But if they're going to promote transparency, why weren't there news about the missing 24 pages that the public needs to know? Why isn't the media pursuing this angle? Frustrating how our media is not thorough in shedding light in simple observations like this.

A congressman from Antipolo, Rizal filed a bill and attempt to make two foreign basketball athletes become Filipinos. The move is legit and there probably aren't any laws to bar the said legislator from doing what he did. If the law is passed and we become champions, he is definitely putting every Filipinos dream to capture the crown a reality. But he is also causing a dent to capture the crown legitimately. Here's why: (1) We're sending a signal that we really can't do it (win the basketball crown in Asia) without these foreigners - great as they are; (2) The congressman is showing a bad example to children that if you can't win it - you can change the rules - as you please; (3) It will show the world that we win contests by technicalities (FIBA rules), using loopholes to win contests.

What kind of culture are we teaching kids who are playing sports? What kind of culture are we teaching our children by passing House Bill No. 2307?

To describe my utter disgust with this lawmaker's reason for filing this bill, here's what he commented to the media, "The 15th Congress has a unique opportunity to make a concrete contribution to our efforts to regain lost glory in international competitions."

Frankly, congressman, I'm not desperate to giveaway passports in exchange for trophies and "lost glory." If you're Filipino - you're Filipino. Period.

The biggest blunder the recent “Major, major” twin tragedies (excuse me for bringing this up again but it’s a must) that happened in the hostage-taking drama and Ms. Universe were all about miscommunication. You can never be wrong in taking communication for granted.

If the dismissed Captain Mendoza were true to his heart to say that he will not hurt his hostages, he may still live up to his family's honor. If Venus Raj (Ms. Philippines) humbly used a translator to answer her question and not be purely overwhelmed by the emotions of the pageant, she wouldn’t be finishing 4^th runner up in the recent 2010 Ms. Universe pageant.

“Ask,” I always tell people when they’re not sure of what they’re observing because through more information, you can never go wrong. Using the right communication, we will avoid fights, quarrels, and God forbid – death and yes, 4^th runner up finishes.

2010 Emmys recognizes Filipino illustrator

We're raking it in. US-based Filipino Illustrator Joseph 'Joe' Andrew Mateo, 38, won an accolade most of us (especially artists) would only dream of - winning the Emmys. Joseph has been featured so many times in the past by several media outfits showcasing his journey from his mediocre artist life to the most-renowned illustrator artist that he became known to be today.

Mateo won the Emmys for the upcoming Pixar-Disney produced made-for-TV feature-length animation, "Prep and Landing." If you've watched any Pixar movie before like Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Up, then you wouldn't be a stranger to this newest offering. It's funny, full of humor, and all the sensibilities of a Disney movie. Mateo's career of fifteen years in Disney is definitely bearing more fruit than he could ever imagine. It's giving a lot of local artist in the country hopes and dreams to hone their craft and be given that chance for recognition. Filipina named California Chief Justice

If in case you haven't heard yet, another Filipina (and the very first Filipino at that) made me proud again a day after another Filipina took the 4th place title of Ms. Universe. This proud daughter of The Philippines stepped on to become the Chief Justice position of the state of California, Court of Appeals Associate Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. Cantil-Sakauye was handpicked by Governor Schwarzenegger for her ability "to independently and fairly interpret and administer the law." Her conservative roots started when she took law in UC Davis and served as deputy District Attorney in Sacramento County. Before becoming an Associate Justice of the Third District Court of Appeals, she was the superior court judge and municipal court judge, serving in each position for seven years.

Eight shallow questions about last night's hostage drama

Nothing will justify what former policeman Rolando Mendoza did last night to make the public take his side but what is more troubling is how the police did their job. Obviously, the police did not do a stellar performance in saving more lives or avoiding bloodshed during the drama and this brings forth a lot of questions what should have or shouldn't have happened. This goes the same with the media coverage: Did the presence of media hampered the effectiveness of the police operation? We just don't know. I'm posting some of those questions below to open discussion and learn valuable lessons from this as a concerned citizen of this nation. This will educate us and give us a broader understanding about the unfortunate incident that took place last night.

On the policeman's dismissal - We all know the disgruntled police officer snapped after hearing he lost his job from the service courtesy of the investigation made by the Office of the Ombudsman:

Why wasn't the former policeman's motion for reconsideration heard?
How many more cases like this is happening or will happen because the authorities in justice are not doing their job?

Just before the shooting started - It started minutes after the police (with full media coverage) took the hostage taker's brother into custody

Who authorized the arrest of the brother of the hostage taker that potentially started the situation?
Did the police know that the tourist bus have a television monitor to know what was going on when they arrested the brother of the hostage taker?
Didn't they know that the media will swarm on the arrest of the hostage taker's brother?

On the assault - If you watched the live or taped coverage of the drama, you'll have the same questions

What were the SWAT doing smashing the windows instead of using night vision goggles to track down Mendoza inside the bus?
In smashing the windows why were the police lacking materials to perform their operation like having ladders to smash the windows?
Why did the SWAT team go inside the bus without night vision goggles or even a flash light?

What is this public-owned vehicle doing in Megamall?

Due diligence is a must to keep the public aware (in this case, Manila City residents) of public officials wanton abuse of our tax money for their own private needs.

This pictures were taken today (Ninoy Aquino's death anniversary day) at SM Megamall Building B, around 11:30 AM, at its second level parking. The two Manila City Tax-owned vehicles with District 1 Manila Congressman Asilo's name on it, were parked right in front of the mall's doors. Notice how they took out the plate number of the public vehicle to avoid being detected. However, they could not take away the conduction sticker off the windshield of the vehicle. They thought they won't be detected.

Ninoy's death in 1984 was the Filipinos' awakening of his/her consciousness of what should be done to right the wrong.

Does Rep. Atong Asilo know this? Does Mayor Alfredo Lim know this?

It's sad that such barangay public officials just don't get it. Let's fire these abusive people, please.

This news is from the U.S. but the main question now is when would Starbucks Philippines implement this? This is definitely great news especially to the Filipino market who loves to go online with their new found multimedia toys like iPhone, iPads, Macbooks, Vaios, and other smart phones. To many of the online community, this initiative by the coffee shop giant is long overdue. Starbucks is a place for reading books, studying, and research. Having this new feature will give more people reasons to go and enjoy the ambiance this Seattle-based coffee place offers. After this great news, you should know that Starbucks will also offer exclusive content only they could give customers. It's called Starbucks Digital Network or SDN. The said network will offer exclusive customers exclusive content only they could provide. According to Helium.com, when online inside their shops customers will get to choose five channels to get exclusive content for their purpose: News, Entertainment, Wellness, Business & Careers and My Neighborhood. Now, how exclusive this will be relies heavily on how enjoyable the experience is. Right now, it sounds promising, with Apple iTunes providing free downloads in the Entertainment channel of this SDN. The other providers are The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.

With this new feature, I sure hope Starbucks will win more customers but like I said it all depends on what their content can provide customers so we'll see how this will figure out in their operations.

Why Google Wave Will Live

No matter how much bashing Google Wave gets, I still think this Google application is a genius. The moment I got wind of its Beta testing, I requested for an account and started toying with it. As soon as I started using it, I saw all the possibilities that I can do with it to help me in my work and personal life. In fact, I dubbed it as the "Facebook-killer" because you can do so much more interactivity with it. In fact, I find Facebook (FB) mundane nowadays - reading other people's stats is not really that interesting for me. Yes FB gets me connected with other people but I need something more useful and meaningful that will last longer than pop culture - hint-hint.

People, especially in the Philippines, love chatting and sharing stories with one another. And Google Wave is perfect for that. In fact you can never go wrong with chatting because people need to exchange words than just posting and not knowing if people will connect or not. Google Wave thread any conversations (like gmail, of course) you make but with photos and other visual capabilities that could make the interaction more meaningful. You can share pictures, do polling, plan events, draft and edit documents, share music and videos, brainstorm. . .there's so much possibilities you can do with it. In fact, people that I asked to try it said they liked it too - especially when we start editing work online and real time.

With all the promise Google Wave can give me, I hope Google will not take The Wave out. I like the wave and there's huge potential in what it can do to help people get meaningful connections both at home and at work. I feel Google Wave didn't get the chance to be known more for people to enjoy its full potential.

Trivia
Aside from "Facebook-killer," do you want to know what other names I gave it to tell people about it? Other names I gave were "Yahoo! Messenger on Steroids" or "Email meets Facebook meets Yahoo! Messenger." How can you not love Google Wave?

In my last post, I thought Apple would be 'nice' enough to admit their mistakes. But it seems like the fastest-growing computing giant have pride bigger than it could probably burst. You would think Apple would admit to an honest mistake but instead - like the previous Philippine government - it would rather save its face by saying that the mistake is more of a software issue than a hardware issue. Good one. Now, they are saying that there's more problem with Apple than what we previously thought.

Fighting fire with love

This is my second and last post for this issue between presidential sibling, Kris Aquino and basketball star, James Yap, and the test of their marriage. Right off the bat, I want to commend Mr. Yap's pronouncements to fight for his marriage. However, I do want to caution him that fighting for this marriage does not just include repentance over his sin to his wife or whatever Ms. Aquino is in protest about. 'Cause if she has reason to believe that he caused this rift (and he did twice before) then he should do WHATEVER it takes to win them back. If Mr. Yap was caught for the third time by Ms. Aquino (or the nth time) to be unfaithful then he should do more than just texting her and close to nagging her about it. He should give her time. In fact, he should do it in prayer. If I were him, I would go down on my knees and ask God's help. This is beyond repair if he caused this rift.

The only thing that bothers me is the cause of this trouble. Admittedly, if this were my neighbor's life - I wouldn't probably hear of it. But since they're public personalities, my concern now are the people who are intently following their story. Ms. Aquino is extremely popular in this nation and what she does is exported into the hearts and minds of women - especially the young ones who are reading their account.

That's why I'm particularly elated to know that James is fighting for it. And since everyone knows about their story, Mr. Yap can even do the new generation a favor by being more responsible and to use their public life to help the young ones value women, value their manhood, and to value their family life.

But yeah, he can't get that from friends or family. He needs to get it from the ultimate source. Like it or not, he should get it from God. Only God can kill the fire with the kind of love only He can produce out of Mr. Yap.

Who is the bigger problem, Kris Aquino-Yap or James Yap?

Just this once, I want to dive into this latest Kris Aquino controversy. I wonder why Kris Aquino left their home so hurriedly and at the same time announced so early her troubled relationship with basketball sport star, James Yap.

Almost immediately, you can place the blame on the man for such problems in relationships but in their case, It's worth taking a second look. To open up this situation, you want to ask these questions to give everything a better perspective - since this case is already very public.

First, why would James say, "It's up to her," when asked if there were more reasons why Kris broke up with him? Is he saying this out of frustration? Is this out of resignation? The public knows how Kris Aquino operate. She's very candid to the point of being tactless at times. Second, why would James be involved with other women when he knows very well the consequences of such actions? Third, why is there no buzz of what exactly went wrong with the two knowing the public have all the access they need to know the personal lives of these two celebrities? You become suspicious already.

As much as I want to give Mrs. Aquino-Yap the upper hand here, unless there's more proof of James infidelity (again!), then surely this is fast becoming a one-sided contest seeing the latter losing by a mile.

On iPhone 4: Why Philippines have it better?

If you haven't heard the news lately, Apple just released an official statement about their iPhone 4's flaw. Apparently, Apple integrated the unit's antenna into the case of the smart phone. Bad move. When using a phone like this, you usually hold the area where they say it shouldn't be held on. That's why it's funny when Apple big boss, Steve Jobs, said this, "Just avoid holding it in that way."

The board room meeting in Apple HQ about this problem have ended already and production for the iPhone 4 Gen II should be out by middle next year. That's not Apple talking - that's me calculating when a new iPhone 4 with this new feature will come out.

While the world got hold of their new Apple gadget, the Philippines can wait and buy a much improved and more sensible iPhone 4. Who says being a third world country don't have its perks?

Arroyo Admin to Aquino Admin: Be kind and fair to Arroyo

I wonder what he and Sec. Bautista-Horn means when they said to be fair with President Arroyo. Their statements want me to ask two questions: If they have nothing to hide, why fear? and Is President-elect Aquino that vindictive and blood-thirsty to put outgoing President Arroyo behind bars?

For Sec. Bautista-Horn's part, I think she got it all wrong if she thinks all the Filipinos ever want to have are infrastructures. I think it's wrong to surmise that all we want are tall buildings, modern trains, and tough bridges. In my opinion, the good secretary should've just be humble enough that the Arroyo Administration has all these to offer and we hope the incoming administration could just further help the Filipinos in their plight until 2016. Something like that. But to suggest what people should feel is not within their rights. Unsolved social injustices, railroading congress, and unaccountable system of governance does not even merit a grade of "good." It's poor and it's compromising the moral fibers of our nation. Lastly, I don't like what Sec. Bautista-Horn said, ". . .I am very hopeful that the next President will further build on our achievements for the greater good of our people." "Our achievements," Ms. Horn? As far as I'm concerned, I think you should've just termed it as "these achievements" because you sound like somebody owes something to this administration. I think the Filipino people do not appreciate tangible progress without the intangible progress.

For Mr. Dee's remarks, it makes me want to ask why people would think that everyone inside the administration are just "sitting around, and using their position for their own personal interest." Are you saying exactly what people thinks? If that was so then you hit the bull's eye. Your statements should be answered with, "if there's smoke, there must be fire." And you just admitted that there is something hugely wrong with this administration's branding and system of governance.

To the men and women of President Arroyo's administration, "Thank you." You guys did your best under the circumstances. But never dictate what those you serve should think about this administration. Allow the people to reap what you worked on and just agree with the statement said once before to allow history decide on what Pres. Arroyo and her administration did. If you think you did enough then that's probably good for you but let us think for ourselves.

It sounds funny to actually imagine that Australia will be bombarded by buckets full of water but that imagery does not bode well for those who will be affected by the continuous downpour of rain. Because of trash, clogged drainage, and undisciplined neighbors of ours - we are bound to suffer more than our neighbors down under. What is the government doing about it right now? Who's overseeing the progress of taking out the clogged sewer system we have in the city? Are we planting more than we should? The hot summer months killed most of the trees that's supposed to hold rain water from the highlands. What are we doing to remedy the situation? What are we doing to prevent disastrous problems?

Coke 'bitin'

[Bē-tin] Colloquial for not being able to satisfy your needs in the Filipino vernacular. That's how I perceive Coca Cola right now. For those runs a business, it's tough isn't it? You have to know the business from inside and out. You have to feel your customers. Coca Cola, on the other hand, is acting like it never knew how to conduct good business practices.

Since February this year, Coca Cola has not supplied customers and store outlets consistently. A lot of the business it supports died already or is dying - including ours. We're exclusive Coca Cola wholesalers yet Coke couldn't supply the needs our customers (retail stores) are asking for.

In terms of communication, Coca Cola has done poorly. It sent mixed signals about its state. So much so that rumors started circulating. A lot of people were saying that the soda giant is on the brink of bankruptcy - suffering from huge lawsuits that they're facing from allegedly a poisoned soda.

Another story surfaced stating more than two months ago that Coke is suffering from logistical problems. The story goes that Coke is in need of more bottles because the demand is greater than they could every fulfill and this is causing them problems. Yet another story came out stating that Coca Cola is suffering from its previous business handler. It's a long story but its basically putting the blame on the latter. And there are more stories that are going around. There's probably a hundred more stories floating and none of them are validated.

What's the point? You remain quiet - stories will circulate. Nasty stories. And Coke does not need that when they're already reaping good publicity out of their "Coke is Happiness" advertising campaign.

Coca Cola is basically managing its operations and public relations poorly.

In a book I read somewhere in Fully Booked that the employers of your business are not the ones who funded the business - it's your customers. If this is Coke's way of treating its customers by not being forthright with its business partners and customers then they have every right to fire Coke.

They are missing the fact that we're partners but by doing this they don't even know what they're talking about. And like their promises to budding business like ours - they're basically empty like this bottle.

Brazil's flood warning to The Philippines

I am taking the Rio Largo, Brazil flood as a warning to our country and I can't just sit down and pray that something changes. Though I do not discount the power of prayer - it is also my duty to act in my faith to remind my countrymen to do something about the flood that we've seen destroyed homes, properties, and even lives.

What are we doing, as a people, to prevent this?

This is the second time I will say it in my blogs. These floods are a warning to all of us who will soon be naming the next destructive storm that will precede Ondoy. I'm being sarcastic. Why wait? Let's do something about it and prepare for the heavy rains as much as the oath-taking of the next president. While we're on that topic, why not pray for President-elect Noynoy.

Minutes before 6 PM, rain poured as the sun sets and the effect was reminiscent of Ondoy.

My family went for a short ride to San Juan to look for a restaurant where we will celebrate Father's Day. As we head off north on EDSA, rain started to pour: frist drizzle-then came the rain.

I read stories of flashfloods in the city of Nashville, Tennessee, USA, Europe, and India early this year and seeing how water was pouring hard gave me chilling thoughts of what Philippines was up to this year since we just experienced El Niño over the hottest-dry season on record. I'm also scared because our nation is still preparing for the new president's oath-taking by the end of this month. You also have President Arroyo winding down her work as Administrator and Commander-In-Chief and preparing her exit.

While driving around for ten minutes, I said "Let's go home." The hard rain reminded me of Ondoy and all I could think about was getting home. Big puddles of rain water started to form at the two outer lanes of EDSA causing more traffic as cars and buses alike drive at a snail's pace to avoid more accidents. I turned on my hazard lights (and so did others) to help others see me.

"This is a perfect disaster forming." I thought. With everyone turning their attention on other government matters, the residents are about to get hit by this storm system that not even the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) was able to warn us. I documented the experience and posted it on CNN's iReport so netizens can help me warn others about this potential disaster.

I'm not being pessimistic but for all intents and purposes, I just want this to be something that the Philippine government (outgoing and incoming) should focus on more this year. I am sure that flood-control, environment protection and its awareness, and disaster management will be one of President-elect Noynoy Aquino's acid tests of his job in the first 100 days in office. As they prepare for the party, I hope this government and the incoming one should be talking to avert any further loss of lives as we brace for La Niña. Let's wait and see as I pray for our people and the government to act decisively and fast.

I think we're sending the wrong signal to our children and creating a bigger divide by saying this. I was private school educated from Don Bosco Makati and University of Sto. Tomas and I think people who got their schooling from cities with Integrated Schools and City Universities ('Pamantasan') have same - if not better - qualifications to lead after they graduate.

We're forgetting that education is the same and culture is what you make out of it. I think the bishop should address the concern of parents who are not instilling values to their children. How are they handling their values system and what is feeding the minds of parents that nurtures the minds of the children? The Bishop forgets that education starts from the home. I think that's where the psychological and emotional fears that should be addressed immediately.

Besides, our kids should be taught how to relate to any kid no matter what status they have in their lives. And if we do that then we're teaching our kids right.

More and more it is becoming apparent that Vice President-elect Jejomar Binay will be President-elect Aquino's first acid test in his job as president. Binay made it clear after congress confirmed his election win that he wants the Interior and Local Government portfolio. Personally, I wonder why he wants that post so badly. I also think it was in bad taste for him to voice his preference when Aquino hasn't vetted any candidate yet for most of the cabinet positions in government.

Will Aquino give way to Binay? Will Binay become Aquino's thorn and be the opposition? More importantly, how will the nation react?

Stever Jobs always wows the crowd with his remarkable presentations. I haven't been to one (and I wish I could see him do product launches in Manila - dream on) but you can just imagine how he weaves his magic and uses such tools like iPhones and iPads to push his product. This time, though, he was lost for words and couldn't get the wifi network to get back one. The whole thing happened - for what seemed to be for Jobs like an eternity - during his iPhone 4 product launch but the audience were forgiving. But they weren't as nice to AT&T who provided the wifi network to this event. Nonetheless, it was a welcome not that such an iconic person like Jobs is human afterall and that no matter how un-stellar the presentation was, people love Mac right now - no matter what.

Filipino recorded asteroid impact on Jupiter

If you have not caught the news yet, a Cebuano-based astronomer named Christopher Go was one of only two people in the world to catch the rare asteroid impact on the gaseous planet, Jupiter, last June 3.

The fireball was as big as planet earth, Go said, and it only lasted for two seconds. Catch it here.

What's so funny about Filipino Time?

It's almost like a joke to a lot of my countrymen when they mention "Filipino Time" like it's the best thing that our culture has to offer the world.

Filipinos are so much into humor and mentioning this seems like it's always said in jest. But who's laughing when you think that "Filipino Time" actually means being late. The challenge with our modern culture is to actually kill this notion and have everyone start on time.

I remembered posting a meeting announcement recently for residents where I live. In big bold letters, I wrote the phrase - "We'll start on time." - at the bottom. I posted the announcement six days before the date and visible enough because it's right in front of the elevator doors. I started on time without waiting for other people to come in. We started on the dot. Late residents probably didn't like what I did but the five of those who came early appreciated that I took my words seriously. Everyone's time is valuable. You set a time - you mean it.

To help our nation BE ON TIME, I posted the link where everyone can sync their watches with the World Time Server. I guess this is the start to make Filipino Time means ON TIME.

Can someone help me with Nearbytweets.com?

I don't know what's going on but this has got to be fixed. Nearby Tweets is a place where you can connect from anyone near where you live. However, I don't know what's going on with my account after signing in because its not giving me the results that I want. However, I'm almost sure there's a browser problem because I used my other computer (PC) and it worked fine there. I'm using a Mac here and Mozilla Firefox v. 3.6.3 to browse the site. It's just giving me this "refreshing tweets" sign and it's not doing anything.

I hope someone can give me answers fast because it's a great application but it's not working on my 'top.

It's ironic that the very people who were supposed to protect its citizens couldn't even pass a simple measure that will ensure that every Juan and Maria will get access to right, accurate, and unadulterated information when they need it as they need it. When they did their sine die or closing of the congress, didn't they think that they would need the help of this bill in the future? It's information that you and I need and this will help everyone.

It's ironic that House Bill 3732 had 180 sponsors (congressmen) when it was tabled in the congress halls. When it was time to ratify it only 128 showed up. What happened to the fifty-two other congressmen who were supposed to ratify the bill. Did they get bribed? Did Malacañang offered another deal before the president steps down this month? Whatever happened, it can only be concluded that our congressmen are proving the world right that Filipinos don't know how to vote their congressmen and we're just being toyed by them.

The Senate passed it's own measure four months ago with Senate Bill 3308. Until then, we will just have to wait.

This news just popped out of my Tweetdeck minutes ago and we, Filipino consumers, should beware. The said glasses' painted designs were tainted with cadmium - a metallic element - that could cause bone softening and kidney problems. It's good that these drinking glasses are found in the United States but you wonder if such products end up in the Philippines — and aghast! What if these products are sent to the Philippines to be sold to us? Who's regulating these from our local government? Who's protecting us? If you know anyone from the health department, customs, or anybody that could alarm the nation about these — please help. Shrek is about to be shown in the Philippines soon. Who knows where these products will end up.

You may not know it but Facebook is violating your privacy. No, they're not selling your information but they "missed the mark" by not making their interface controls simple enough for people to set their privacy controls better. The 26-year-old CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, admitted with these flaws and they'll be launching simpler control features soon. That's a relief because I'm sure majority of the 400 Million Facebook users don't even know that their names, faces, and status appear in places you don't even want it to show.

Is this the official statement of the Roman Catholic faith or just the bishop's? I was saddened how the bishop of Lucena, Quezon termed - in effect - that being an Evangelical Christian (born again) is a sin. I'm also in disbelief how Bishop Marquez is so insensitive to the families and the bereaved of the late Governor Rafael Nantes. If the priests are the equivalent of the Apostle Peter, and each one aims to be like Jesus - I'm just sad that this church head is going the opposite direction.

"There is no politics in the decision of the Church. I just implemented the Church laws," he said. Bishop Marquez, there's no such thing as Church laws - the church embodies Jesus and Jesus wouldn't refer to a book and say, "I wouldn't be compassionate to this one because he's a sinner." How can you invite and promote change in society if all you can think of are the "clean" people going to your church? Jesus was with the despised tax collectors, the prostitutes, etc. He did it because he was reaching out and wanting them to see a better life - you Bishop Marquez just did the opposite thing. It's a shame we're better off following laws than following and doing the example Jesus did.

You may say there's no politics involved in your decision but you're out to please man (Vatican) - that's politics.

You can never go wrong reading Seth Godin's books. It's small, handy, and yes - insightful. I held the book at a popular bookstore in Bonifacio Global City and started chomping on it like there's no tomorrow. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it because it's not right reading it without actually buying it. "What really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts." - there are those options we can do in life but there's only one thing that we should be doing in life. This is really intriguing and I can't wait to go back and...er... buy the book. It's Php550 and it's worth being in my virtual shelf. Yep, I'm praying for one. Read on.

The Dip by Seth Godin

Here's a taste:
Joyrides are things you do just for the fun of it, without caring if you’re getting anywhere. Seth himself said (roughly) that “if you play the flute just because you enjoy it, not because you’re trying to make a living as a flautist, then The Dip doesn’t matter.” It is worth noting that for some people college is Joyride, not a Dip!

Lotteries are a particularly seductive variant of Dead End that looks like a Dip, in that we periodically see people who do make it out into the Good Life. Unlike a Dip, though, there is nothing we can do to ensure we make it through to the other side; we are at the mercy of external forces. Thus, even thought there is a non-zero chance we might win the Lottery, for most of us it really is a Dead End, and a complete waste of our potential for greatness. This is particularly true for Talent- (rather than Skill-) based disciplines, where the Lottery took place before we were born.

Quests, on the other hand, are Dips that look like Dead Ends. Seth encourages us to pursue Dips where we can make measurable progress towards a well-defined goal. However, he admits that this doesn’t apply to things like cutting-edge scientific research, where there there are no guarantees or guidelines; fortunately, he says people like that won’t be discouraged by anything he says in his book. :-)

However, I think he overstates the case when he says Quests (like Crick & Watson’s search for DNA) don’t have measurable progress. They do, but it is a matter of personal growth and accumulated wisdom, not the usual business metrics. Even though we may not reach what we thought we were aiming for, a worthy Quest enobles us and ends up benefiting humanity.

Wowowee host, Willie Revillame, is seen to be exiting the popular noontime show of network giant, ABS-CBN. It will be remembered that the host put ABS-CBN in the spot by asking the management to choose between a radio entertainment host and him. The sadder part though is not his exit but his thought that he could play god to the people joining the show by giving "them hope." I wonder what person like this think by giving less privileged citizens of this nation money and making people rely on them instead of filling people with value like dignity, respect, and honor? Money will indeed blind you and it's sad that he already professed that his life revolving on a temporal matter instead of something that will give him more in life - say, The Bible. Move on, Mr. Revillame. There's more to life than material things and money. I hope you will be able to see joy beyond the money you enjoy.

During Marcos time, he lost a lotta love from people. After EDSA Revolution in 1986, I loved the guy. During Cory's time, he was a jerk. During Ramos' time he became more of a jerk. During ERAP's time, he started lying low and during Arroyo's time - he made up for lost time. Sen. Enrile is not perfect but over the years, his bills and his stand makes a lot of sense. No one likes him because he's called an opportunist but years after I noticed a lot of changes and since then he's been consistent with this new found change. Sen. Enrile may be old and my contemporaries may not like him but if it wasn't for him - our mobile phone companies would've been abusing us right now. He led the inquiry against phone giants SMART, Globe, and Sun. Now, you're enjoying more talk time because of the bill he authored.

I may not understand him a lot but we need his wisdom and he is standing by his principles. I can't wait to see what 2016 will be like after his term.

Senator Enrile, you got my vote in the last election because we need your wisdom and you continue to contribute to this senate and in my eyes - so far - you've been fair. Please continue to be an example to all and I am glad you are an independent and I hope to hear more of your plans and bills soon. Mabuhay ka, Manong Johnny. Dahil gusto mo happy kami.

Election's over and I think the senators think the drama is over. And what happens to the hard-earned tax money of the Filipinos? I'm talking about the C5 road project that has red flags tagged all over it. The adjustment to the project is irrational, illogical, and the bad part is our tax money is involved to benefit Sen. Villar's real estate projects in Parañaque and Las Piñas.

When people say, "It's time to heal?" What do they mean by it? Was it Sen. Enrile's money that was used in this case? Wasn't it our money that is being poured into this waste? If there's someone who should be paying his dues to make sure he's not going to be kicked out of the senate halls, it is Sen. Villar.

She wields more than 100 plus house representatives while Aquino's liege only has fifty congressmen to speak of. Did you notice someone commenting on your post who is a complete stranger and you wondered how they got hold of your Facebook account? That is what a growing number of Facebook users have been up in arms about. If you read the CNN article, you will understand take a snap shot of how important your privacy is. The statusphere has 400 million users and so many are against what Facebook is doing. Now is privacy is your concern? Yes, you may get new friends here and there but in a world where people hide their true identities, you can never be sure how protected you are when fraud happens because of personal matters that is made public because of this "flaw" in the programming of the said social media.

Why romanticize what Cory did?

Why romanticize Cory? I pray that we don't pin our hopes on something that God gave us a long time ago. Cory was a great person and she is blessed but why are we so worried about filling her shoes when we should be thinking how we can improve ourselves. If there's something Cory could do that we should improve on is sticking to God's word and making sure this is lived out. And then there's grace. God is faithful to give something we don't have and if it is lacking in skills, patience, talent, and perseverance then we should ask for it. Let's not fill Cory's shoes. Let's fill our own shoes so we can lead our lives and then our family. This piece was picked up here at the Philippine Daily Inquirer today, May 16, 2010 (Sunday).

Does this statement picked up from the Inquirer's story (May 16) today just confirms the collusion happening between Arroyo and erstwhile presidential candidate Sen. Manny Villar? It seems so. The administration party is mustering enough votes to catapult Pres. Arroyo as speaker of the house. And if you read the story further (click newsinfo.inquirer.net link above), you will see that party vice president for membership, Prospero Pichay, is "confident" to get the support of Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) and Sen. Villar's Nacionalista Party (NP). Should we be wary? The campaign doesn't stop here. Let's call our congressmen and get more explanation out of this declaration made by Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

Is HAPPY HORSE a Red Horse product?

Every time I have a customer looking for a 'Happy Horse' I couldn't help but laugh thinking people had to one too much Red Horse drinks until I saw this blog about the "legendary" beverage. Looking at the picture, you could definitely see why it's called a 'happy horse.' But take a second look, it looks nowhere near its original counter part: the horse image, the circular mark around the horse, the "Red Horse Beer" logo - it looks more and more like a fake beer. It begs the question now, "Doe San Miguel know about this and if so, are they authorizing it?" People swear that there's one happy horse bottle in a case of Red Horse Mucho (6 bottles) and they say this is 'special' because its alcohol content is higher. An urban legend that is shrouded by a mystery. I haven't seen one myself.

I remember what Paul said to Timothy (1 Timothy 4:12) and what the definition is of being young back then was (It was age 40 and below!) when he was given that advice. I think age is nothing but a number and that parents are never too old to learn stuff this age is throwing at us. I always wonder what type of music my kid would like and if I would like it as well and learning from this piece, I really believe that we should be adventurous in learning new technology. It's fun and remember the lola in the 'Bayantel' commercial playing online games on her PC? I thought that was cool. Hip-ness has no age written on it and I can't wait my son to call me 'cool' 'cause by then I know we speak the same language and our relationship will grow stronger.

May 10 Philippines Election (in pictures) - CNN iReport

My wife, my co-worker, and I went to the polling place early to make sure we avoid monstrous lines. I was very excited to see the Precinct Count Optical Scan or PCOS machine and how to fill up the ballot. Voting started pass 7:10 AM and I was impressed by the order the teachers and volunteers implemented to make sure voting is as easy and pain-free as possible. After I voted these are my observations:

Precinct numbers changed
I was assigned precinct number 0481-A when I registered in January 2009 but "accidentally" I found my name in another precinct (0454-A). This will be a horrible experience for voters who do not even know their precinct location.

Ballot shading area
The shading area is no bigger than 2mm x 3mm. And it was hard for me to train my felt tip marker and contain the shading within the area.

No privacy
The classroom tables were small and cramped and I could hardly fit myself (185lbs 5'8") with the ballot. It was tough voting and being careful in shading the tiny oval shaped area. Preferrably, the voting area should be arms length wide and option to stand.

Uncertainties
I don't know how sensitive the ballot was so thinking about it was an additional stress but I think that's okay. I was sweating and I was afraid I could ruin the ballot just by moistening it.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience and I can't wait to see the result later. After voting, I now leave everything up to God. God bless the Philippines.

I can't believe Noynoy Aquino is already saying that he will share fifty to eighty percent of his presidential power once elected. What kind of presidency would we have? Who are not my senators and why

There are candidates and re-electionists I feel should not even be considered in this coming fifteenth congress. These are:

1. Bong Revilla, Ramon Bautista Jr. - You read that right. He recently changed his last name to, perhaps, give him that name recognition edge on the ballot. But what is a name recognition when you can't even pass a bill in the senate? See his un-accomplishments.
2. Lapid, Manuel 'Lito' - His bio reads, "His proven track record as a champion of the masses" , it makes you wonder what track record they speak of. They forget that this actor-senator is a contemporary of Pres. Joseph Estrada in the movies, which makes him the "champion of the masses." Look at his accomplishment and see if our tax money is worth his time in that legislative floor.
3. De Venecia, Joey - He is part of the ZTE scandal and continues to lie that he meant to expose the anomalies of the ZTE-Abalos-Arroyo scandal whereas he exposed it because he lost the bid. You ask me, he has vendetta written all over his campaign.
4. Lim, Danilo and Ariel Querubin - I question their eligibility. The Senate is a law body and I don't see the Sen. Raffy Biazon in them. The outgoing senator has done his homework and I just don't see what they will be doing on the floor. What would make them fight for my children's cause if the very first thing they embodied was rebellion? They went against the administration but that does not make them my leader in the senate.
5. Satur Ocampo and Lisa Maza - Progressive militant candidates that coalesced with the Bongbong Marcos in the Villar senate line up. What's up with that? They're a sell-out. They don't stand up for they are fighting for. Boo.

1. Ruffy Biazon - His character, impeccable; His work is admirable
2. Riza Honitveros - She opens her mouth and she makes sense.
3. Alex Lacson - Authored a book; he embodies my dreams for a progressive and righteous living Filipino.
4. Nereus Acosta - A come-backing politician (congressman) of Bukidnon and will represent the teachers and the improvement of our education (at least that's what his political ads say of him). A well respected academician. His profile.

Candidates I'm still praying for - I need three more to complete my senate list:
1. Sonia Roco - Does being the wife of a great statesman enough for you to be on the senate floor?
2. Jinggoy Estrada - I observed his work and when he speaks, he makes sense. His bio reads, "he introduced 289 bills and resolutions, two hundred forty-nine (249) of which were primarily authored by him. He took law at the Lyceum University while serving as Vice Mayor back then. He deserves a second look. We'll see. His work.
3. Kata Inocencio - I know she's an Evangelical Christian like me but I'm still assessing whether she'll be effective in the senate. I'm 80% convinced she's worth given a chance. 6. Pia Cayetano - Synonymous to triathlon races and biking but I never heard of her accomplishments until I got to read her senate bio. I almost placed her in the "People that should not be back in the senate" list because she seemed to be doing more outdoor activities than staying put in the senate floor doing the work of a senator. I'll be praying if she should be in my list of twelve senators. Her work.
7. Gwendolyn Pimental - Daughter of senate's old man, Nene Pimentel. She took law and public administration courses. It makes you wonder if Sen. Pimentel was really prepping her to replace him during this time. She seems capable and reading her biography, she will be specializing in uplifting children's welfare.
8. Franklin Drilon - The former Senate President of the 12th Congress that was touted to be the action senate that passed a lot of bills under his watch. Praised by many fellow senators. I may need another elder statesman in the list. We'll see. His biography.
9. Yasmin Busrao Lao - Of the three muslim candidates I read, she is the one that makes more sense. She's an accomplished public servant and she will champion the cause of our brothers in Mindanao. Her biography.

Fully Booked overlooked this one

I called the attention of one store clerk at Fully Booked in Bonifacio Global City (BGC). I said that there's a product that should not be in a place where kids are.

He followed me and led him to a section where this book, "Tweak" by Nic Sheff rests. It's by the children's books where my kid hangs out with his nannie every time we visit the place.

"It's a Young Adults book, sir." the clerk politely answered.

The well-meaning clerk probably answered me according to what his superiors ordered him to do and he stacked it himself but this is where Fully Booked erred big time. The whole area is for kids and majority of the people visiting the place are kids and their parents. If the clerk answered me that the books is geared towards parents, I would've shut up but since the book was geared towards young adults then this critically claimed book has no business being in the children's section.

This is where context is important and Fully Booked staff should apply that rule - all the time.

Like UK, RP should reject voting 'tactically'

Citizens of the United Kingdom will be voting hours from now and the parliamentary leaders they will bring to power will decide who will be the next Prime Minister.

I agree to former Prime Minister Blair's assertion that voters should not vote tactically just because the other options are not 'popular.' That is exactly what is happening now as voters I talked to will prefer Noynoy because their candidate will not win the elections. Blair said that voters should go for what they "believe in." He added, "If you think their policies are good, vote for them, but if you don't, don't." It's that simple.

Voters who believe in their candidates should stick to their candidates if they believe in them. I said it in my posts that you should vote because you know, NOT because you think you know. If you vote for the other candidate because of survey results and the bandwagon effect, then you don't even know why you should be voting for to begin with. And if you don't even know why and who you should be voting to begin with then you need to pray. Because as citizens, it is our right and responsibility every six years to voice our gripes and opinions and this can be heard through the ballot. Please don't waste your vote. Please don't vote tactically.

Coping with our May 2010 Meralco Bill

Meralco just sent our store's electric bill the other day and it was shocking - Php9,783.30 for the month of April! Can you believe that? So the very first thing I told my crew was to control the use of the ice cream freezer.

I studied what was going on and this is what I found out. First, I realized that my average usage per month since late last year was 663 Kilowatt hour (Kwh). The store maintains an ice cream freezer, a tall two-door soda cooler, a shorter beverage cooler and a decent amount of lights. This was enough, I thought. However, we used 738 Kwh this month or 75 Kwh more than the average. I calculated the amount per Kwh this month and I realized it was Php13.26/Kwh. That's high I thought.

Out of curiosity, I computed how much per Kwh last month was and found out it was Php11.20/Kwh only. What shocked me though was when I found out that our October 2009 bill was only Php9.01/Kwh. Since I could not do anything much to control what Meralco is charging right now so I thought I should be changing things within my control. So the wisest thing to do right now is to set aside an amount from daily sales so I can be best prepared for these type of things.

The bill says that my store is consuming an amount of Php163 per day on electricity. I think it will be wiser to set aside an amount of Php200/day just to be sure. Overkill? Just being wiser for the rainy season (no pun intended).

Having cost-cutting measures in place and setting aside a budget, the only one thing left to do is to make promotions that would increase sales volume of Cooling Station. We'll just hope that the rate of electricity will go down next month. For now, I control what I can control to make sure my budget doesn't bleed.

Fast forward twenty years later: Meralco

If you recall the days when the government controlled the land’s utility companies, it was one of the toughest times. I remember how it was tough to get phones connected at our location or how hard it was to pay bills conveniently.

Not anymore to this day.

I took a picture of the Meralco payment center (electricity distributor), which were located minutes away where I live. The utilities company, which was used to be controlled and managed by the Marcos Administration is operating far better now. Meralco is now run by the Lopezes who owns the biggest television network in the country, ABS-CBN. The Lopezes happen to be one of the staunchest enemies of the Marcoses. It’s a bitter-sweet justice for the Lopez family if you ask me.

They run the business professionally as you can see here in the pictures and accountability is realistic because complaints are heard and improvements are periodically done to ensure quality of services it offers.
